Volumes up, investment down

The volumes carried by private wagons had increased in 2017, however investments for new wagons stopped.

As TCDD Tasimacilik hit the record in freight and renewed its fleet in the first year of liberalization, the private companies fell behind in both topics.

In 2017, 9.7 mn tons of freight was carried by private wagons. This volume is 6.5% more compared to previous year, however less than the growth of TCDD Tasimacilik (10%).

Situation about new investments is even worse. The private wagons in service was 4025 in 2016, where this number dropped down to 3916 in 2017. One reason for this decrease is the new legislation about wagons. Some could not meet the terms, and were not registered. And new wagon investments of private could not compensate this decrease.

As TCDD Tasimacilik begins to decrease the discount for private wagon owners, it’s a question mark if the wagon ownership will continue to be attractive or not. Two new train operator has not invested in new locos and wagons, and preferred renting the rolling stock from TCDD Tasimacilik.
