Rail freight hits record after record.
After completing last year with a record volume, rail freight continues its fast increase in first four months of this year as well.
Despite starting competition with private operators since late 2017 and losing two important regular loads to them, TCDD Tasimacilik succeeds in increasing freight volume every year. Last year, the company hit record high by reaching 30 million tons of freight. Two new private operators also managed to increase their volumes in their first three years. These two companies, Omsan and Korfez Ulastirma had carried 4.7 million tons last year, which means 14% of total rail freight. All three operators stated that volumes continue to increase in 2021, which may end up with about 40 million tons of freight by the end of the year.
The domestic rail freight volumes of TCDD Tasimacilik continued to increase in 2021. The domestics freight volumes increased by 25% in first 4 months compared to same period last year, reaching to 9.55 million tons.
A similar increase is seen also in international transports. TCDD Tasimacilik is the only operator carrying international loads which had carried 1.37 million tons in first four months. The company carried 1.14 million tons last year in same period, which means 20% increase. Last year was another record, 3.4 million tons, which was the highest volume of TCDDT in history and was 33% higher compared to 2019. If similar volumes continue this year, the total international rail freight may exceed 4 million tons.
