6 soon rail openings in Istanbul


Six rail projects will be commissioned till end of this year in Istanbul where share of rail has reached to 18%:

Gayrettepe-Istanbul Airport metro (M11)

The first metro connection to Istanbul Airport is expected to be opened this October, except the first station (Gayrettepe). When all completed, the 37.5 km-long route will be completed in half an hour. The service will be driver-accompanied-full-automated at the beginning and will soon be driverless. This will be the first metro using Aselsan’s signalization system. Project is held by Transport of Ministry.

Bostanci-Dudullu metro (M8)

The first metro of Asian side of Istanbul in North-East direction will soon open. It’ll connect ferry services at Bostanci, Marmaray, Kadikoy-Tavsantepe-Sabiha Gokcen metro (M4) and Uskudar-Cekmekoy metro (M5). Test runs continue and line is expected to be commissioned by the end of this year. Project is held by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

Sabiha Gokcen, Istanbul’s airport in Asian side, is expected to be opened very soon. This new section will extend Kadikoy-Tavsantepe metro line to airport. Test runs started on the line. Project is held by Transport of Ministry.

Hisarustu-Asiyan funicular (F4)

F4 will be the fourth funicular line in Istanbul which are playing important role for public transport on this hilly city. Test runs started on this 1-km-long line. It’ll connect Levent-Hisarustu (M6) line to Bosphorus. Using ferries from there, two regions in Asian side will be connected to metro network in European side: Anadolu Hisari and Kucuksu. Project is held by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

Mecidiyekoy-Yildiz extension (M7)

The second phase of Mecidiyekoy-Kabatas metro project, Mecidiyekoy-Yildiz section will be opened within a couple of months. Two new stations, Fulya and Yildiz, will be added to this line. The two remaining stations, which will play a very important role by connecting very busy areas of city and integrating with several public transport services, can be opened after archeological works are completed. Project is held by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

Başaksehir-Kayasehir metro extension (M3)

This is the extension of Kirazli-Basaksehir metro line which will connect city hospital and Kayasehir to metro network. Test runs continue. This part with 4 new stations are announced to be opened within this year. Project is held by Transport of Ministry.

  1. I’m UK citizen. I admire roll-out of 21st century transport links in and around world metropolis Istanbul and up to the Black Sea coast. Well done Recep Tayyip Erdogan and team.

  2. SAW – Kadıköy metro is open since October 4, 2022. It connects with Marmaray train at Ayrılık Çeşmesi station.
