While everybody is waitin for new private train operators in Turkey, Korfez Ulastirma became the first to get the train operator license.
Korfez Ulastirma is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tupras founded for transportation of Tupras loads by rail.
Some of the terms for getting the license have been met and others are guaranteed to be completed in the given time period by Korfez Ulastirma. Thus the company got the license and became the second -train operator of Turkey after TCDD Tasimacilik.
Tupras has the third biggest rolling stock fleet with 452 tank wagons after TCDD Tasimacilik and Arkas. The oil transport between Izmit and Kirikkale rafineries are currently being done by rail.
1.7 million tonnes of oil was transported by rail in Turkey in 2015. Over 1 million tonnes belong to Tupras.
Izmit-Kirikkkale railway is passing through Ankara which is currently closed due to Baskentray project. Thus, transports are being done via Konya, which is a longer way with no electrification in most of the way. Korfez Ulastirma is expected to run its locos next year after opening of Ankara stretch.
