Fastest growing rail network
The new investments in urban rail continues. For “fastest growing rail network”, the ratio of length of new rail investments to current length of rail network is used.
Istanbul has the fastest growing rail network, where 276 km of rail network is currently under construction including Marmaray. When all completed, the length of rail network will be tripled. Even by the end of this year, the total rail network will reach to 250 km.
The second city in the list is Konya. Ministry of Transport is building 45 km of light metro system at Konya. One of the two lines under construction has the same beginning and end stations with the current 21.2-km-long tram line.
The third and fourth in the list are Gaziantep and Kayseri. The reason of such fast growth is the suburban train projects in both cities. Gaziantep will have 25-km-long suburban train line (Gaziray) and Kayseri will have 33-km-long in the first phase (Kayseray).
